Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is a propylene glycol ether of methyl cellulose Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose uses and applications include: binder, emulsion stabilizer, film-forming agent, viscosity controlling agent in cosmetics; thickening agent in paint strippers; protective colloid, viscosity stabilizer in emulsion paints; suspending agent; lubricant; plasticizer for ceramics, refractory materials; suspending agent; used as a food packaging binder, food-contact coatings, asphalt emulsions, caulking agents.
HPMC is used primarily in construction materials like tile adhesives and renders where it is used as a rheology modifier and water retention agent.
Functionally HPMC is very similar to HEMC (hydroxy ethyl methyl cellulose)
(Hydroxypropyl)methyl cellulose use as thickener for aqueous and non-aqueous systems, clear films with grease resistance, binders, lubricants, steric stabilizer and water retention aid. Dissolves in water, undergoes reversible gelation upon heating, non-ionic, does not complex with ionic species and is surface actuce and enzyme resistant. Solutions are pseudoplastic.
