Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a semi-synthetic, viscoelastic polymer which is a cellulose ether. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is soluble in some organic solvents, as well as in solvent mixtures of water-organic solvents. It does not gel when heated.HPMC is a non-toxic raw material derived from cotton and wood.
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is hygroscopic after drying, but stable. Its solutions are stable at pH 4-8 (1% solution 25°C). The viscosity of the solution decreases with increasing temperature. Heating-cooling reversibly transforms HPMC from a solution state to a gel. Depending on the grade and concentration, the gel temperature ranges from 50 to 90°C. HPMC aqueous solutions are anti-enzymatic and maintain good viscosity stability during long-term storage. However, its aqueous solution is susceptible to microbial attack and preservatives should be added during storage.

As a water retaining and retarding agent in cement mortar to give the mortar pumping ability.
